Oops…Apple did it again!
How is it that Apple is the only company leading the computing industry? Apple shares all the clues with everyone, but no one seems to follow.
1. Intuitive Input Methods:
Apple's Steve Jobs hinted long ago that intuitive input methods make great products possible. Macintosh made the revolution of personal computing with the mouse and GUI, iPod's clickwheel, iPhone's multitouch, and now Vision Pro's eye tracking and hand gestures.
2. Curation and Optimization:
Apple's team of experts carefully decides what's best for its users, not based on what people want, but what they need, as Steve Jobs suggested.
3. The Ecosystem:
According to Cook, a combination of software, hardware, and services along with a collaborative ecosystem of their products make their products a great family of products. Adding their own SoCs has enabled them to go even further.
4. Consistency:
Apple stands out in the computing industry due to their consistent design approach, confidence in their products, and incremental updates. They take the necessary time to ensure that every aspect is done properly and in their unique Apple way. When facing the same set of challenges as other companies, Apple starts from scratch and designs solutions from the ground up, adding their distinctive essence. This results in products that have a familiar and consistent design, akin to the patterns seen in nature's evolution. Interestingly, Apple was one of the pioneers in making their products less user-repairable, which aligns with nature's strategy in the animal kingdom. As a result, people are able to sell their products at a higher price, retaining more value.
5. Quality:
Focusing on Quality rather than trying to fit within a desirable price helps them focus on what's really important rather than trying to sell more units- which they do effortlessly when they create their own markets. The Airpods were not expected to become so widely used at four times the cost of a regular pair of Bluetooth headphones, but here we are.
6. Cultural Influence:
Apple made a big deal out of their update to Stickers, which Apple-haters are laughing about. In the end, people have no control over hardware innovation, they can't choose whether their devices have 8 or 12GB RAM, and they can only use stickers and emojis. Apple understands this very well and keeps their users engaged culturally.
7. Branding, Marketing, Communications:
Apple's competitors lack an understanding of Branding, Marketing, and Communications. Look at Tim Cook smiling and saying Good Morning in front of Apple's campus on a bright sunny day. Where do other companies present their products? Not a clue. In Samsung's keynotes, the mood is often dark and dystopian.
